The 1856 Monmouth Academy & It’s History
The 1856 Monmouth Academy is more than a historic building—it is a lasting part of Monmouth’s story and a testament to the community’s longstanding commitment to education.
On May 25, 1852, Dr. Henry V. Cumston conveyed the land to the Trustees of Monmouth Academy for the construction of a building dedicated to education. The land was conveyed for just $50, laying the foundation for what would become an important place of learning and community life.
Today, we seek to honor that vision by preserving this treasured landmark and giving it new life as a welcoming place where people of all ages can gather, learn, connect, and create memories for generations to come.
